NEW MUSIC: “SOUL RUN” BY TANIKA CHARLES

AAAA.PNGRising star of Canadian soul music Tanika Charles presents her first single “Soul Run” produced by Slakah The Beatchild (Drake).

“Soul Run”, produced by Slakah the Beatchild (BBE Records), best known for being Drake’s producer and collaborator, is the first single by Tanika Charles and it’s coming out February 10th on Record Kicks. The song anticipates the release of album also called ‘Soul Run’ on April 7th.

Considered to be the “next big thing” among the Canadian soul community, in a few short years Tanika Charles has transformed from an emerging solo artist to a commanding performer and bandleader, a staple in the Canadian soul scene both on stage and off. Although her career is only at the beginning, Tanika has already collaborated with the likes of Estelle, Lauryn Hill, Mayer Hawthorne and Macy Gray, along with regular appearances on TV and National Network (CTV, Global, CBC Radio).

Growing up on a musical diet of Patti Labelle, Jill Scott, Bob James, Stevie Wonder, D’Angelo, Bjork and The Black Crows, Tanika’s eclectic taste shines through in ‘Soul Run’, an autobiographical song that sounds like a breath of fresh air, in which the warm sound of Motown’s vintage soul mixes perfectly with much more modern sonorities and hip-hop beats. Edmonton raised Charles presents an immutable charm, at times endearingly abrasive and honest in her vulnerabilities: if Tanika’s singing it, she’s lived it! In fact, “Soul Run” comes from a tragic part of Tanika’s life: trapped in an emotionally abusive relationship in rural Canada, she decided to “borrow” her then fiancée’s car and ran away to Toronto to begin her singing career, never looking back. Now she is ready to tell her story to the world.
